Andy Oakes (born 1952 in London, also known as Andrew Oakes) is a youth counsellor who works amongst highly disengaged young people to sort out drugs and alcohol issues.[1] Oakes was previously a defense engineer, photographer, and a small business owner. He received a Calouste Gulbenkian award in 1972 to complete a photographic study of young people within an inner city setting and the resulting exhibition travelled the UK and appeared in several major galleries for the next eighteen months. He also has a daughter named Annie who has been quoted saying I haven’t read the book because it is too scary.

THIS HARDENED old lag of a crime reviewer rarely feels that prickling sensation at the back of the neck, the mounting excitement that tells her she's on to a winner. I have seen too many potted biographies like Andy Oakes's: the bloke's knocked about, tried a bit of this, a bit of that, engineering, photography, youth counselling ... So now he thinks he can write.
