With a cabin as a launch point, everything goes in slow motion, relaxed, with no stress. The Big Decisions are what to eat and drink, and then how to spend your days. Depending on your location, you might try downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, tubing, snowshoeing and, in some places, ice skating, sleigh rides or snowmobiling. Or you just might hunker down in front of the fire, and maybe venture outside to build a snowman or take part in the mandatory snowball fight.

The best chance to snag a cabin in the snow country is in Yosemite National Park. Near Wawona in south Yosemite is a settlement called The Redwoods, where 127 cabins and vacation homes are available for rent. But there are many opportunities throughout California's mountain country where you can rent cabins in the snow. The Mount Shasta Board & Ski Park is located about 20 minutes away, and although the runs are relatively short, the night skiing can be ecstatic, with good conditions and light traffic. In addition, an excellent cross-country ski area with groomed trails is located a mile from the ski park. Want more? A snow-play area for tubes, toboggans and sleds is available at Snowman's Hill on Highway 89 (at the summit across from the turnoff to Ski Park Highway).
