Isela Phelps Views
I recently had the fabulous opportunity to interview Isela Phelps, loom knit designer and author of the new booklet, Learn to Knit Cables on Looms. Iselav’s new booklet is a beautiful, glossy, soft-cover booklet with 9 brilliant designs that will take you on an exciting cabling journey. Inside the booklet, you will find helpful directions on making cables, including photographed visual aids. Cables can bring beauty and sophistication to your projects and Learn to Knit Cables on Looms is definitely an important addition to any loom knitter’s library. This booklet has a little something in it for everyone, whether you prefer socks, afghans, or purses and bags. I was trying to narrow down to one favorite project and just couldnf’t choose between the Fairamay Shawl on page 12 and the Jamiec’s Mitts on page 14. I think I am going to have to make them both. See how wonderful they are?
ISELA PHELPS is the author of the bestseller Loom Knitting Primer and Loom Knitting Pattern Book. She is an active member of the online knitting community, where she promotes loom knitting as an alternative to needle knitting. She also serves as an editor and publisher of Loom Knitters Circle, an online magazine for loom knitters. Isela has been loom knitting for seven years and is considered one of the top loom knitting experts in the US. She lives in Cache Valley, Utah with her husband and two children.
As Isela Phelps explains in Loom Knitting Socks, her latest loom knitting book, socks are a perfect project for working on a knitting loom. A wide variety of socks can be produced from plain and simple socks through to creating socks with texture and pattern. Knitting looms are similar to a large knitting nancy and are therefore ideal for producing tubes of knitting. Isela Phelps explains in Loom Knitting Socks, how simple shaping techniques can be used to turn this simple tube into a fitted sock with a turned heal. The clear description of the anatomy of a sock and basic sock making techniques removes some of the mystique from sock making and helps to make the creation of socks accessible to even complete beginners.
In Loom Knitting Socks, Isela Phelps discusses the different types of yarn that are best for sock knitting. She has also detailed the yarn required for all projects using the standard yarn weight system as well as giving the brand name. This is extremely useful as it allows knitters to accurately substitute yarn.
