In computing with graphical user interfaces, a drop-down list is a user interface control GUI element ( widget ), similar to a list box, which allows the user to choose one value from a list. When a drop-down list is inactive, it displays a single value. When activated, it displays (drops down) a list of values, from which the user may select one. When the user selects a new value, the control reverts to its inactive state, displaying the selected value.

This search box reveals a drop down menu after the user clicks into the input field. The menu is meant to act as a filter with several checkbox options that allow the user to select specific categories for his search. When the user hovers out of the input or the filter box, the drop down will disappear.

Drop down boxes are a common option used for creating document forms. Microsoft Word has the ability to generate a Word document with drop-down boxes to serve as a form when saved as a template file. Using a drop down box instead of an empty text field allows the organization or person collecting information via form input to force the end user to choose from a finite set of form inputs instead of a potentially uncontrollable array of options.

Type the potential options for the drop-down box into the blank text fields in your document with an associated value for the item to return with the form input. This can be the same value as the label you input, or it can be a numeric representation, such as one or zero for yes or no.
