igualada cemetery

Located in Igualada, Spain, the cemetery is embedded in the landscape of existing mountains. When looking at the site plan, it is difficult to notice typical tombs, but rather spaces in the landscape. The gradual and subtle ramp descends to stacked tombs. The architects, Enric Miralles and Carme Pinos, created a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere incorporating the nature, existing landscape, and use of concrete, stone, and wood. The stacking organization of tombs allows more space for the tombs and open courtyard. Embedded into the mountain, the tombs are arranged in different level. The highest point remains unfinished building, second level is tombs and inner circle that contains traditional spread out tomb rather than stacked. The lower level that ramps down plays a role of courtyard, but also acts as main circulation path.

Igualada Cemetery or New Cemetery (Catalan: Cementiri Nou) is a cemetery in Igualada, near Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, designed by the architects Enric Miralles and Carme Pinós after winning an architectural competition in 1984. Constructed between 1985 and 1994 as a replacement for the Old Cemetery (Catalan: Cementiri Vell ), the cemetery became widely regarded as one of the most poetic works of twentieth century Catalan architecture. Enric Miralles, who died in the year 2000 is buried in one of the tombs.[1]

About an hours drive from Barcelona in a new industrial area on the outskirts of Igualada nestles the Igualada Cemetery. Designed by Enric Miralles + Carme Pinos, before their split, the cemetery displays a beautiful rapport between architecture and landscape. The spatial configurations, constructions methods and material choices create a serene ambience that leaves you slightly unsure whether the building is finished or has been abandoned. Walls seem determined to hold back the earth, in places details are left rough and unfinished, light scoops protrude from the ground overgrown with native grasses and plants, reinforcement projects from concrete panels and is rusted and weathered.
