Many people when looking at purchasing an air conditioner (hvac system) for their home come across systems known as inverters. So what is an inverter air conditioning system? Usually, when a standard appliances of any kind starts there is a sudden spike in power consumption. This can often be seen in some homes where the lights dim or flicker for a few seconds. This is because the appliances is drawing so much electricity to start. This is often the case with standard ducted air conditioners. They draw a lot of power at start up.

Inverter technology in air conditioners allows air conditioners to be more powerful whilst being more energy efficient at the same time. Whilst conventional air conditioners work at a standard fixed speed, inverter air conditioners works like an accelerator of a car, increasing or decreasing power consumption as it is needed. These inverter systems can offer significant energy savings to users.

Inverter air conditioning systems are also sometimes slightly more powerful than non-inverter systems and are also usually quieter to run. Inverter air conditioning systems are more environmentally friendly than standard units and therefore should be considered by anyone considering purchasing an air conditioning system.

We have a 75 ton that we converted to water cooled from air. The vfd's control pump speed to maintain 94' condening pressure. Lowered power consumption almost 30% but I would expect over 20% drop going from air to water cooled. We have a new vfd starter panel ready to install and need to program a new operating sequence. Big question is effect on compressor oil pressure when we lower speed. 'Trane' will not give any help but the 'ASI' programming software allows us to create logic to automatically revert to the pump speed septup if the oil pressure drops too low. The next obsticle would be defeating the suction unloaders when the inverter is controlling compressor speed.
