The average chocolate Easter egg, such as a Cadbury's Buttons egg or a Rolos egg, contains about 500 calories per 100g serving. It has roughly 55g carbohydrates, 6g protein, 30g fat, and #xBD;g fiber. The recommended daily allowance for adults is 300g carbohydrate, 50g protein, 65g fat, and 25g fiber. (These numbers are based on a 2000-calorie-a-day diet.) The problem is that many Easter eggs weigh much more than 100g: Dairy Milk Caramel is 197g, while Cadbury's Wispa is 313g. You can see that if you ate one 100g Easter egg in one day, it would comprise approximately a quarter of your daily caloric intake, a sixth of your daily carbohydrates, and half your fat allowance, without giving you very much protein or fiber at all. Eating a 313g egg would more than triple these numbers.

Long considered a guilty pleasure, chocolate has recently been getting some good press: research shows that chocolate contains flavonoids, antioxidant substances that are good for the cardiovascular system. The flavonoids in chocolate are called procyanidins and flavanols, and they're similar to the antioxidant substances in green tea and grape juice. These substances guard the heart and arteries against damage, and can also protect DNA from damage leading to cancer. The higher the chocolate's cocoa content, the more antioxidants it has. Dark chocolate has the most, milk has less, and white chocolate has no cocoa content at all. If you choose to enjoy an Easter egg with at least 60 percent cocoa content, you'll reap the health benefits of flavonoids.

It's possible to find slightly lower-calorie chocolate eggs. For example, you can set aside the 1680-calorie Cadbury's Wispa egg and eat a 1435-calorie Maltesers egg. Dark chocolate, as well as being better for you, is also lower in calories: Green and Black make a 992-calorie 70 percent dark chocolate egg. These alternative products aren't saving you that many calories, however: moderation is still your best bet.
