Delrin is a polymer plastic that is a good choice as a substitute for parts made of wood or metal. Delrin is easy to saw, drill, lathe and even sand. It is stiffer than most plastics and can be machined to finer specifications. Black delrin (Dupont 300CP BK642) has improved thermal stability and exceptional ease of processing for both molding and machining.

Black Delrin 300CP BK642 has a density of 1.42g/cm3. It has a yield stress of 10.3 kpsi and a yield strain of 22 percent. Nominal strain at break is 40 percent and it has a tensile modulus of 440 kpsi. The melting temperature of black delrin is 178C. Black delrin is an acetal polymer resin also known as polyoxymethylene (POM). Delrin has exceptional tolerance to impact and strain.

For molding, black delrin should be heated to 210 to 220 degrees C, with the optimum being 215C. Optimum mold temperature is 90 degrees C. Black delrin should be dried or cured at 80 degrees C for two to four hours. Hold pressure during forming should be between 12 and 15 kpsi. Mold shrinkage is between 1.8 and 2.1 percent. Delrin is noted for low-void molding applications.
