Atari Gaming System Views
Atari developed one of the most popular and the most best selling gaming systems in the world. In 1977 Atari successfully launched a gaming system that almost everyone in the world wanted. The Atari Video Computer System or VCS created a new way to entertain the young and old alike in the late 70s to the early 90s.
T The popularity of Atari lasted for many years. However, with the introduction of a more realistic gaming system today, Atari became a relic. In the 80s, Atari game systems and its game cartridges flew off the shelves of stores worldwide. You can even compare Ataris popularity with the Christmas season craze that you may experience with other popular gaming consoles available in the market today.
The good: It's just like the old days: the Atari Flashback 2 is an homage to the original Atari 2600 game console, with 40 built-in retro classics from gaming's early days. The entire system costs less than most current PC and console games, and it includes two vintage joysticks. The system can even be hacked to play original 2600 cartridges.
So what is the legacy of the Atari 2600 VCS? I think that it turned on the American public of the late 70's and early 80's to a new hobby called 'video games' and indirectly to home computers. Atari changed the way people thought of their TV sets - television could be interactive, not just a passive entertainment device. The 2600 VCS provided a multiple-gaming platform that the gamer could just go out and purchase a new cartridge when they grew tied of the existing game -- unlike most system that predate the VCS that were dedicated to a specific game and could not be changed. The 2600 provided a standardized platform where third party hardware and software could develop products. The VCS controllers are still an industry standard. And yes, the 2600 games were fun to play then and they're still fun now - even after all these years!
