Connect Words With Images Views
From Classroom Instruction That Works, Marzano’s research shows that you should always connect new concepts to something the students already know. In addition, you should provide students with an image along with vocabulary words/concepts. The brain can store a limitless amount of images and can recall them much more quickly than text.
Based on this research, it seems logical to connect a picture to the content area essential vocabulary before placing it on the word wall. The students will be much more likely to recall the word and itp’s meaning. Be sure to include those content area words in your daily word wall activities. Your observation of students during those activities are a formative assessment in that you can measure where your students are in their understanding and determine if additional practice is necessary. Itt’s also valuable to the students to measure what words they need to continue studying. Make your word walls come “alive ” by allowing students to use a pointer or their finger to point to words. Adding this kinesthetic approach to your word wall activities will engage students and also help with their retention of the information.
